The Family in Alaska

Wow–it’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks!

After I shipped my work and my display setup out to Oregon last week (which always takes longer and involves more hair pulling than I anticipate), our boys met us in Alaska for a long awaited family vacation in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. It’s a wilderness park that you get to via very small planes, and the scenery is spectacular. At left is a shot of the family in front of the plane on a polar ice field.

I’ll write more details of the trip and the inspiration I got from it in a later post. Today I’m set up and ready to go for the Art in the High Desert show in Bend, OR. I had a few nervous moments in the last few days when my display panels failed to arrive when I expected them to, but they finally got here yesterday about an hour before my assigned setup slot at the show–whew!

I didn’t get a good setup shot, unfortunately, so I’ll share one of my newest pieces that I’m excited to show for the first time. “Cairns” at left is the newest in a series I’m working on that explores improvisational log cabin blocks combined with wonky stripes. The name comes from the stacked look of the blocks, as well as from the pebble quilting that I’ve stitched into the light stripes. It’s 20″ x 24″ and mounted on painted black canvas so it hangs directly on the wall like a picture.

The show runs today through Sunday on the banks of the Deschutes River in the Old Mill section of Bend. It’s one of the prettiest venues I’ve ever seen! Hours are 10-6 all three days, and admission is free. From what I was able to see yesterday at setup, it’s going to be another really high quality show. I’m in Booth 83 and I’d love to see you if you’re in the area!
