Squares 2013 Cindy Grisdela

Squares 2013 Cindy Grisdela

Happy New Year–I didn’t mean to be gone so long!

The end of 2012 was almost a blur for me. I did two weekend shows at the beginning of December, plus I had a commission to do 30 pillows for a lodge in Vermont, due by the end of the year. I’m thankful to say I got them mailed out before Christmas.

I decided to try a new project this week to get my creativity going again after being out of the studio over the holidays, at right. These solid squares are hopefully going to turn into a decorative curtain to cover a window in my house. I don’t plan to put batting in it or quilt it, just put a backing on and hang it so it will hopefully act a little like stained glass. I got the idea from one of Kaffe Fassett’s early books, but I didn’t want to paper piece the squares like he did or have a pre-planned idea for the composition. My method is just to upend the box of scraps and have at it!

The squares are less “wonky” and improvisational than my usual, and I may decide not to stick with straight lines and throw some angles in for variety, but I’m pleased with the start so far. The curtain will be about 18″ high by 66″ wide, so I’m working with squares in multiples of 3″–some will be 3″, some 6″ and some 9″, with maybe a 12″ square or two. I have no idea how it will actually turn out–that’s the fun of it for me! It’s always a thrill to see how the colors interact, especially using solids.

I’ve got lots of ideas for some new work I want to get finished for the Baltimore Craft Show February 22-24, 2013–I’ll start on that next week. I just recently found out my booth number at the show will be 3505 and my information is up on the ACC site here –that’s pretty exciting.  Mark your calendars!
