Prairie Star Quilters Teaching Trip

I’m just back home from a great trip to teach and lecture at the Prairie Star Quilters Guild in St. Charles, IL. It’s a large guild with about 300 members, so they have an evening meeting and a morning meeting to accommodate as many schedules as they can–what a good idea!

I taught my Artful Improv – Permission to Play! workshop all day on Monday to a motivated group of 14 quilters, then gave my popularĀ Playing with Colors lecture Monday night. Then on Tuesday I gave my Combining Stitch Patterns lecture to the morning group.

Several students were brave enough to show their work in process at the morning meeting, above. But they all worked hard and came up with some really interesting blocks.

Rachel was only able to stay for the morning, but made great progress on an Improv Block using prints!

Jan combined Improv Blocks and Improv Circles to start her composition, using her own hand dyed fabrics.

Sharron focused on Angled Stripes and was able to get her top completed.

These are just a few of the wonderful pieces that my students worked on during our time together. As always, when I teach Artful Improv I’m encouraged that students are able to use the techniques I show them to create original work that doesn’t look like anything else the other students are doing, nor does it look like my work!

The lectures were well attended and lots of questions were asked–always a good sign.

And I was able to fly Southwest with two suitcases weighing exactly 49.5 pounds each.

The ladies of Prairie Star were very kind to this traveling teacher–I even got a personal tour of the charming town of St. Charles on the Fox River in Illinois. It was a treat to visit them and I appreciate their warm Midwestern hospitality, especially Teresa and Chris–my hostesses!

I’m home for a bit, then traveling in July to teach and lecture at the Bayside Quilters Guild in Easton, MD, exhibit at the Ann Arbor Art Fair, and at the Fine Art Fair at the Chase Center in Wilmington, DE.
