"Tides" Cindy Grisdela

Two pieces found new homes at the Annapolis Arts & Crafts Festival last weekend–Tides and Homestead.

Both of these quilts are mounted on stretched canvas–a new way for me to display my work–and I’m excited that they spoke to people enough to want to take them home. Tides especially found many new admirers!

This show was a challenge in many ways, starting with the rain and mud for set up on Friday.

On Saturday morning, I went over to the venue early, although not early enough, as it turned out. I had all my work to set up–wall pieces, pillows, table runners, covered journals and more–but when I got there, I discovered that I had been given misinformation about the orientation of my booth, and my careful set up from the day before was now facing the back of my neighbor’s booth and my panel walls were blocking the openings where the visitors would be coming by!!

There was no choice but to reorient the panels–no easy task given the muddy conditions. So I set to work, all the time wishing I had thought to put a change of clothes in the car before I came over (another thing to put on the master list I’m creating). Time was short before the show opened at 10 AM, but I got everything switched around, my walls hung with work, the table set up, and the tags attached only a few minutes after 10. And I only dropped one piece in the mud! I was thankful that I had purchased a remnant of indoor/outdoor carpet at Home Depot the day before so people didn’t have to walk in the mud once they got into the booth.

So I was able to take a deep breath and greet the hardy visitors who had ventured out despite the conditions. Whew! All’s well that ends well–the finished set up is left. And there was no more rain the rest of the weekend.

Thanks to all who visited the show and chatted with me about my work–it’s so much fun to meet new people and show them that quilts can be art as well as functional items.
