“Square Dance” 2010 Cindy Grisdela

My wall quilt Square Dance is part of a new exhibit called “Large Squares, Small Squares” at the gallery in the Artists’ Atelier in Great Falls. The show opens tonight with a reception from 6:30-8:30 pm.

When I was looking to see what I had that would fit in this show, I realized that I don’t work in a square format very often. I wonder why that is?

This was a fun piece to do–completely improvisational because I had no plan when I started other than a loose interpretation of the traditional Log Cabin block, which is endlessly fascinating to me because there are so many ways to go with it. The “Dance” part of the title refers to the texture in the stitching lines. I just started with one motif and moved on to another and another all over the surface of the piece.

The Atelier is located at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G in Great Falls, VA. I hope to see you there, but if tonight isn’t a good night, the show will be up for several weeks, so you can plan to see it during open hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 12-4 PM.

Come see how many ways there are to interpret a square!
