Several months ago I received an email from VIDA–a company that takes original artwork and turns it into clothing and accessories like scarves, tops, and tote bags. They asked me to submit some of my artwork to use on their clothing designs. I gave it some thought, but then got busy with other things and didn’t follow up. When I heard from them again a week or so ago, I made the time to go to the site and really look at their products and their story.
VIDA pairs artists and designers with makers in other parts of the world to create beautiful products using high ethical standards. A part of the proceeds goes to literacy programs to help the makers with basic skills in reading, writing and math to improve their lives. You can see a short video about the company here.
Sounded like a win-win to me.
So I went through my portfolio to pick out a few images that I thought might work. The site has a cool upload tool that allows you to see how your image might look on a scarf or a top. The designs look best when they are cropped from the original.
Here’s an image of my Flash of Insight quilt and the scarf I designed from it. Flash was one of those pieces that took a while to gel into a composition I liked, but when it did, it was like a flash of insight out of the blue.
And an image of my Aztec Autumn Quilt and the top I designed from it. Aztec was a fun piece to design creating texture and movement out of solid fabrics. I love the energy of this one!
There are two more scarves and another top up on the site now–you can see them in the featured image above, and I have some tote bags in process. Click here to see the entire collection.
