Gray/Bright Series 2014 Cindy Grisdela

Today is the last day at the American Craft Council show in Atlanta. It’s been a high energy show, and I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people in a new city and introducing my work to them.

Yesterday, one of my pieces was chosen to be part of a feature on the local morning news about the show! The piece was First Crocus, at the top left of the picture on the left. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see the clip, but a lot of people who came to my booth yesterday did and mentioned it, so that was fun.

First Crocus is part of a new series of pieces exploring different combinations of gray and bright colors. The one on the bottom left is called Spring, which I hope we going to see very soon, and the larger one on the right is called After the Storm, which is a little more subtle with the soft yellow, peach and green combination in the central sections. And they are all part of a continuing series focusing on improvisational shapes as the focal point, enhanced with lots of texture in the stitching.

I had a lovely surprise yesterday as my aunt and two cousins whom I hadn’t seen in a number of years made the drive down to Atlanta from Nashville for the show and a visit! It was fun seeing them and catching up a little bit.

Lots of pieces have gone to new homes this weekend, including Amber Harvest, at left. This piece has always been special to me because it was the one that launched my work into the concept of a central improvisational block, surrounded by asymmetrical borders and enriched with dense stitching to create an interesting textural design. Harvest also won a Juror’s Choice award at the Art Quilts Lowell show several years ago, which confirmed to me that I was onto something interesting! I hope it’s new owner will enjoy it as much as I have.

The show runs today from 11-5 at the Cobb Galleria Centre. It’s going to be a little wet out, so it’s a good day to spend at the show! I’m in Booth 1404 on the left wall as you enter, and I’d love to see you there.
