Quilts on the Road

"Jazz Rhythms" Cindy Grisdela

“Jazz Rhythms” Cindy Grisdela

These days my quilts are traveling almost more than I am!

Last week I sent off Jazz Rhythms to Southern Accents, an exhibit in Florida sponsored by Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). The show will take place at the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Art – Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL from May 16 – August 22, 2015. I was pleased to be invited to exhibit my work in this show by the juror–Dr. Sandra Sider, SAQA Past President and Consulting Curator, Texas Quilt Museum.

“Jazz” is an earlier work that is designed with large improvisational blocks and energetic stripes, calmed by irregular red solid spaces that give the eye a place to rest. It’s a relatively large piece–56″ high x 35″ wide.

It looks like a great show–if you’re in the Melbourne area, put it on your calendar!

And I was really excited to see my quilt Mirage on the website at the US State Department!

Mirage - vertical quilted striped wall hanging

Mirage 55″ x 32″ Cindy Grisdela Art in Embassies program

Mirage was chosen last year to be part of an exhibit in mounted in the public rooms of the residence of the US Ambassador to East Timor in Indonesia, and will run for approximately 2 1/2 years while that ambassador is in residence there. The focus of the exhibit is American fiber art and will include a variety of pieces by US artists. According to the exhibit curator, fiber plays an important role in the culture of Timor Leste, or East Timor, and this exhibit will provide an opportunity to share American textiles there.

I was a little surprised to realize that I was one of seven US fiber artists chosen for this exhibit–click here to see the other work that is included.

The Art in Embassies program has been in existence since 1963, and currently oversees 200 venues in 189 countries. Click on this link to read more about this exciting program.

Rainbow Playing with Crayons Quilts

“Playing with Crayons” Cindy Grisdela

Finally, two of my favorite quilts–Playing with Crayons and Playing with Colors–have been traveling with an exhibit associated with the publication of 500 Traditional Quilts–a book they are included in. They were both hanging at the International Quilt Festival last fall in Houston, TX, and Playing with Crayons is on exhibit this week at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago. I got an email on Monday saying that the book exhibit has been so popular they have received numerous requests to have it travel to additional venues, and the organizers asked if they could keep my quilts for those exhibits until the end of 2016.

It’s very exciting to be able to share my work so widely!

I’m home myself for a few weeks getting ready for my next shows–here’s a partial list:
