I stopped by the Maryland Federation of Art’s Circle Gallery in Annapolis, MD today to see my “Painted Desert” art quilt hanging in the American Landscapes exhibit there. I always enjoy visiting this little gem when I’m in town and it was really exciting to see my work hanging there in an all-media exhibit!

Painted Desert – Art Quilt by Cindy Grisdela

Although I’ve entered work for shows here before, this is the first time I’ve been accepted–it’s pretty tough competition. For this show, there were 63 artists selected from nearly 900 entries! It’s a lovely show with a wide variety of art–photographs, paintings, mixed media abstracts, and at least three other fiber artists.

Painted Desert is an abstract landscape quilt that I created for my book, Artful Improv. I used the colors that reminded me of a visit to the Painted Desert section of the Petrified National Park in Arizona some years ago. It’s a beautiful landscape with layers of color in the rocks. I used curved stripes to represent the rock striations and added some inset strips for additional interest. Each stripe has a different texture stitched into it–including abstract lollipop trees, pebbles, waves, and both square and round spirals.

I’d highly recommend a visit to the show if you’re in the Annapolis area–the gallery is located at 18 State Circle and it’s open daily from 11 AM – 5 PM. There’s an opening reception this Sunday from 3 – 5 PM and the show closes September 22, 2018.
