Today is the second day of the Blog Tour for my new book–Adventures in Improv Quilts–and my good friend Maria Shell from Anchorage, Alaska is the featured blogger. Maria is an artist, teacher, and author of Improv Patchwork: Dynamic Quilts Made with Line and Shape.

I’ve known Maria for years, since we met at a SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) conference in about 2014. We try to get together whenever we’re at the same venue, like Houston or QuiltCon–we even did a joint book signing at Houston one year. I’m a huge fan of her work and I’m thrilled she’s participating in the Tour. Visit Maria’s blog at

Each weekday until Wednesday, October 20, 2021, different bloggers will be posting their perspective on the book. If you add a comment on any of the blogs, you’ll be entered to win an eBook copy of Adventures in Improv, generously donated by C&T Publishing.

The winners won’t be chosen until after the Tour ends, so if even you miss a day, you can still go back and participate.

Picasso’s Chickens – Cindy Grisdela

Today’s featured quilt from the book is Picasso’s Chickens, above. This is another type of Improv Puzzle quilt, using a variety of elements that began with leftovers from other projects–Improv log cabin blocks, Improv Curves, Angled Stripes and inner Curved Strip borders. I have a new class I’m calling Improv from the Scrap Bag that will take you through the process of creating your own Improv quilt from leftovers!

I’m grateful to all of the talented artists who agreed to participate and get the word out about the new book!
