I’m thrilled that 3 Friends won “Best Interpretation of the Theme” in the Mid-Century Modern category at the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza September 14-17, 2023.
Many thanks to Mancuso Show Management and to the show judges for this honor. And thanks to my friend Lenny van Eijk for the photo of the ribbon, since I wasn’t able to attend the show.
You can see all the winners at https://www.quiltfest.com/upcoming-shows-and-events/pennsylvania-national-quilt-extravaganza/new-heading-page/2017-quilt-competition-winners/
3 Friends was inspired by my studies with Nancy Crow. The large shapes emerged from series of small studies in black and white. I made them much larger and gave them some attitude, as though they are kicking up their heels and dancing across the quilt surface. I see them as three figures, but others have seen ships or other forms—that’s the beauty of abstract design!
There is a variety of different motifs stitched into this piece to give a sense of texture and dimension. I did all of the free motion stitching on my Bernina Q20 sit down sewing machine. It was a lot of fun to do!
I will be teaching at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, also a Mancuso Show Management show, next year – February 29 – March 3, 2024. Registration has just gone live and you can get details at https://www.quiltfest.com/register/mid-atlantic-quilt-festival-2024/workshops-lectures-activities-by-instructor/cindy-grisdela-improv-curves/
I’ll be writing another blog post soon with more details on that.
