Go Wild with Prints and Solids

Course Type:

Mix your favorite prints with solids or “reads as solids” small prints like tone on tone or grunge to create a fun Improv quilt design that maximizes the wonderful qualities of each type of fabric. You will learn how to cut curves freehand, without a pattern or template, and how to combine them in different color combinations to create the design.

The class will include discussions about color and pattern, as well as design options to create your own composition.

Best of all, there’s no way to make a mistake in my Improv classes! If your elements don’t end up to the size you intended, I have lots of tricks to make things work without unstitching or starting over.

The quilt shown is an an example of a quilt I’ve made using these techniques.

Basic sewing skills and a machine in good working order necessary.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that each one of us has the ability to be creative–we just need to allow our creativity space to grow. Improv is a great way to give yourself permission to play with no rules and no patterns. I encourage my students to explore their own ideas using my techniques as inspiration to design their own original art quilts. We talk about color, about simple design principles to keep in mind as you create, explore improvisational techniques that I use in my work, and discuss ideas for quilting and finishing. I enjoy teaching and my classes can be successfully adapted to different skill levels.
