Stained Glass Runner In Process

I’m in the studio finishing up my new pieces for the Baltimore Craft Show later this week. I’ve been creating these long skinny quilts that can be used either as table runners or wall hangings and I had an “aha” moment last week that led to a brand new idea–or at least a new way to

combine improvisational blocks.

One of those is my new Stained Glass runner, shown at left in the quilting process and as a top before quilting. It’s a simple idea–making improv log-cabin style blocks using different shades of predominantly one color and then combining them with asymmetrical borders. The finishing touch is lots of dense free-motion stitching to add texture. If you right-click on the image, you’ll be able to see the texture better. This piece is going be about 14″ x 38″ when it’s finished.

I want to write more about this when I have more time, but it’s fascinating to me that I often come up with interesting design ideas at the end of a marathon session of creating–usually when I’m on a deadline for a show. Hopefully I can get more of these done for the next one.
