There are a few spaces left in an exciting workshop at Madeline Island School of the Arts in September!
I’ll be co-teaching with Maria Shell and Sarah Bond for five days September 25-29, 2023 on magical Madeline Island in northern Wisconsin.
The workshop is called Piecing Perspectives: Creating with Units, and we’re going to take a deep dive into all the ways you can create design elements and combine them into an original quilt–like squares and rectangles, triangle shapes, curves and more.
This a is unique experience to learn with three Improv teachers, each with their own perspective on color, technique and design!
Classes will be a mix of short lectures from each instructor, demos on the techniques, and one-on- one help with design and puzzling the elements together into a cohesive whole.
Students can chose to use ideas from one, two, or all three instructors. There won’t be “shoulds” or “have-tos” involved–it will be a fun time playing with fabric and thread.
If you’d like to learn more, I will be hosting an Instagram Live event on this Tuesday, July 11 at 5 PM Eastern. Maria, Sarah and I will be on hand to discuss our favorite units and answer any questions you might have. To join, just visit my Instagram at 5 PM on Tuesday. We did an Instagram Live on Sarah’s feed a couple of weeks ago–you can listen to a recording of that at this link.
If you have questions you’d like to hear us discuss about anything quilt or Improv-related, just let me know by responding to this post, or sending me an email at [email protected]

Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin. It’s a beautiful setting to get away and focus entirely on quilting–good food, beautiful views, and nice accommodations. You can rent a sewing machine if you don’t want to bring your own, and if you don’t want to stay on the island, there are options for accommodations a short ferry ride away in Bayfield, WI.
Here are some examples of quilts we’ve made with the types of units we’ll be exploring in class;
